I am inspired to compel you to stop, look, and reflect on the story of life contained in small moments. It is the commonality of these shared experiences, the universality of human feelings and the mutual pleasure created when audience and artist identify with the subject matter of a painting that gives meaning and inspiration to my work. |
In
my first experience with watercolors, more than twenty years ago, I found that
painting provided stress-relief from my work as a dentist. Learning that I could define and re-create a good
composition was exciting, but what followed was irresistible; the discovery that
I was capable of creating shape and changing colors.
Ideas and inspirations, long
juggled with my dental career, burst forth, making it impossible for me to follow
any other path. Since giving up my dental practice nearly a decade ago, I have
immersed myself fully in the world of watercolors. While I enjoyed my time as
the President of the New England Watercolor Society, have had success as an artist
in competitions, and have embraced the joy of teaching watercolors to others,
for me it always comes back to the act of painting itself.
I am inspired to compel
you to stop, look, and reflect on the story of life contained in small moments.
It is the commonality of these shared experiences, the universality of human feelings
and the mutual pleasure created when audience and artist identify with the subject
matter of a painting that gives meaning and inspiration to my work.
Although
grounded in realism, it is distinct abstract design, bold color and light that
are the primary elements used to lure you "into" my paintings. For me,
the play of light on an object or scene is the catalyst that sets an idea in motion.
I
discovered a special delight in painting flowers. Mixed with human reason and
expression, they help us see and express ourselves. I explore flowers, intimately
as a bee might, to find all the curves and unknown passages within the framework
of their setting. The flower becomes a life: feelings, personalities and above
all mood develop as I paint. |
